Rebbetzin Hinda Faivelson

The Ultimate Aishes Chayil

It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the petirah of Rebbetzin Hinda Faivelson a”h, wife of Rav Shmuel Faivelson zt”l, rosh yeshiva of Bais Medrash L’Torah of Monsey and one of the gedolei Torah of America. Rebbetzin Faivelson was a daughter of Mr. Harry Schiff z”l, a unique baal habayis of a bygone era in America who had tremendous esteem for Torah and talmidei chachomim. She married Rav Shmuel husband in 1952. Rav Aharon Kotler zt”l was once attending a function on behalf of Bais Medrash Govoah and was deep in conversation with several distinguished, wealthy baalei batim who were supporters of the yeshiva. Our of the corner of his eye, Rav Aharon noticed Mr. Schiff enter the room. Rav Aharon felt compelled to excuse himself, telling the philanthropists, “You must excuse me. I have to go greet the richest man in America!” The baalei batim looked bewildered. Harry Schiff made a living, but he was by no means a very wealthy man.Rav Aharon explained, “Do you know who his sons and sons-in-law are? They are all gedolei Torah. His oldest son is Rav Shea (rosh yeshiva of Mesivta Bais Shraga), his younger son is Rav Yaakov (a close talmid of Rav Aharon Kotler and son-in-law of the Brisker Rov, Rav Yitzchok Zev Soloveitchik), one of his daughters is married to Rav Shmuel Faivelson, and another daughter is married to Rav Meir Herskowitz (a close talmid of Rav Aharon and rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Bais Binyomin of Stamford).” Rebbetzin Faivelson served as the ultimate aishes chayil, making it her life’s mission to support her husband’s harbotzas haTorah and doing everything in her power to facilitate his learning.Talmidim relate that the rebbetzin so valued her husband’s learning and harbotzas haTorah that she did not look at her efforts as sacrifices. Rather, she viewed them as marvelous opportunities to partner with him in his avodas hakodesh. Rav Faivelson was once trying to encourage a talmid who was in shana rishonah to learn night seder in yeshiva. He told the talmid that during his own shana rishonah, he had a chavrusah who would come to learn with him in his apartment at 1 a.m.The rebbetzin infused their home with such simcha and chashivus for Torah. One of her sons-in-law said that not only did the rebbetzin inculcate a tremendous chashivus and love of Torah in her daughters, but her daughters always thirsted to hear a good vort and words of chizuk, because in their home, they were given to understand from the youngest of ages that there was nothing more important than Torah learning and divrei Torah. The rebbetzin remained supremely devoted to Rav Faivelson throughout his life, and even more so during his difficult final years, when he took ill and was no longer able to continue with his harbotzas haTorah.Rebbetzin Faivelson leaves behind a beautiful Torah family. Her sons are Rav Avrohom Moshe Faivelson, rosh yeshiva of Bais Medrash L’Torah of Monsey, and Rav Boruch Levi Faivelson, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Derech Hachaim of Yerushalayim. Her daughters are Rebbetzin Chaya Fischer, wife of Rav Yehuda Fischer, R”M at Yeshiva of Telshe Alumni of Riverdale; Rebbetzin Leah Rosenzweig, wife of Rav Yosef Rosenzweig, a noted talmid chochom in Monsey; Rebbetzin Yehudis Levin, wife of Rav Shmuel Yehuda Levin, rosh yeshiva at Telshe Yeshiva in Chicago; Rebbetzin Tova Blumenthal, wife of Rav Yaakov Blumenthal, rosh kollel in Yerushalayim; and Rebbetzin Sara Gitty Kammer, wife of Rav Avrohom Kammer, R”M at Yeshivas Alexander and rov of Khal Nachlas Yaakov of Central Court in Lakewood. Rebbetzin Faivelson also leaves behind many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The levayah will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the Congregation Sons of Israel Holocaust Memorial Chapel, located at 613 Ramsey Street, in Lakewood, NJ. Yehi zichrah boruch.
